FOODS THAT CAUSE ACNE

Foods That Cause Acne

Acne is a skin condition that can be caused by a bad diet and eating certain foods. While some people are more prone to developing acne than others, there are specific foods that can trigger breakouts in people who would otherwise enjoy an acne-free life.

Foods that are high in sugar and refined carbohydrates are the biggest culprits when it comes to causing bad acne around mouth, chin breakouts, forehead, cheeks and a lot of times your full face breaking out. These foods cause spikes in blood sugar levels, which in turn cause the body to produce more insulin. This increase in insulin promotes the growth of acne-causing bacteria and also leads to inflammation.

Other foods that have been shown to cause breakouts include dairy products, chocolate, soy, refined grains, animal protein and peanuts. In some cases, these foods can cause an allergic reaction that leads to the development of acne. Some foods that are high in salt can also cause breakouts by dehydrating the skin and cause it to produce more oil.

If you find that you are breaking out after eating certain foods, it is best to avoid those foods altogether or find a replacement. You may also want to consider talking to an esthetician about your acne. They can help you determine if food is actually causing your breakouts and suggest other treatment options.

It may seem hard to avoid the typical western diet and all of the foods that cause acne. However, by making some simple changes to your diet and lifestyle, you can clear up your skin and enjoy an acne-free life.

Fast Food

Fast food is one of the worst things you can eat if you have acne. Fast food is loaded with sugar, refined carbs, bad fats, and salt. All of these ingredients can trigger partial acne or your full face breaking out.

Hamburgers

A "simple" burger can contain over 50 ingredients, many of which are bad for your skin. The bun alone contains ingredients like bleached white flour, high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, folic acid, guar gum, and preservatives (these are just some of the ingredients). The burger itself contains ground beef (which is often treated with hormones and anti biotics), salt, and fat. And then there's the cheese, ketchup, and other toppings that can add more sugar and bad fats to the mix. All of these ingredients can trigger breakouts.

French Fries

French fries are one of the worst offenders when it comes to causing acne. They are usually fried in bad oils and contain high levels of salt. If you must eat french fries, bake them at home in healthier oils or air fry them.

Pizza

Pizza is another food that is loaded with cheese, sugar, carbs, and bad fats. The sauce on pizza is usually very sugary and can cause breakouts. If you want to eat pizza, try making a healthy version at home with whole wheat dough and fresh vegetables.

Sugar

Ice Cream

Ice cream is one of the most popular desserts in the world, but it's also one of the worst things you can eat if you have acne. This "treat" also has a lot of ingredients and is loaded with sugar and bad fats. It's also very high in calories, which can lead to weight gain and an increase in insulin, both of which can trigger breakouts.

Chocolate

Chocolate has been shown to cause breakouts in some people. Chocolate contains sugar and bad fats. Chocolate can cause the body to produce more insulin, which can lead to bad acne.

If you find that chocolate is causing you to breakout, try dark chocolate, which has a lower sugar content. You can also look for chocolate that is dairy-free.

Does Dairy Cause Acne?

Dairy is shown to cause acne. Casein and whey are proteins in milk which help to stimulate growth and hormones in growing calves. The mother cows that produce this milk are also treated with artificial hormones, so all this combined together throw your hormones out of balance, when consuming this milk.

If you find that dairy is causing you to breakout, try avoiding dairy altogether or switch to a plant-based milk like almond milk. You can also look for dairy-free alternatives to cheese and yogurt.

How To Avoid Acne Causing Foods?

The best way to avoid acne causing foods is to focus on eating a healthy diet. Eat plenty of whole foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Avoid fast food, sugary drinks, and bad fats.

Don't forget to consume foods rich in vitamins like omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E.

How Long Does It Take For Food To Cause Acne?

It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days for food to cause acne. If you eat a food that you are allergic to, you may breakout within a few hours. If you drink or eat a food that is high in sugar or bad fats (ie. milk, pizza, cheese, soda, hamburgers and milkshakes) it may take a few days for the breakouts to appear.

Another example is alcohol which in certain people can quickly cause inflammation, dehydration, and make acne worse. So, if you know you have an event coming up where you'll be drinking, it's best to avoid alcohol a few days before the event and when you're at the event drink water in between your drinks.

It also depends on if you regularly indulged in these bad foods. If you eat bad foods once in awhile, it's less likely to cause breakouts. But if you consume bad foods regularly, your skin will be more prone to breakouts, but definitely try avoiding those foods altogether or eating them in moderation.

If you want to figure out if food is causing your acne, there are a few things you can do. First, keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat and drink for a week (or two). Also, write down when you first breakout to when the acne breakouts got worse or calmed down. After a week or two, look back at your food diary and see what might of lead to acne.
